General Description

Our transmitters are surgically implantable and can be used for transmission of biologic data from unrestrained animals. Subcutaneous implantation eliminates wires penetrating the skin and restraints associated with direct wire telemetry. Subminiature size permits implantation into small animals or into areas of the anatomy heretofore inaccessible.

Encapsulation

Transmitters are entirely encapsulated except for the gold terminal posts which are connected to the power source and electrode lead wires. The entire assembly must be further encapsulated before implantation. This can be done by potting in beeswax.

Reception

Transmitters are frequency modulated with an effective range up to 7 meters depending on intervening tissue and the quality of the receiver and antenna. Frequency response down to DC can be obtained from standard receivers by obtaining an output from the ratio detector.

Power Sources

Transmitters are powered by a single silver oxide cell of the type used in hearing aids and watches. A 3 volt lithium cell can be used to power a FM-6L or FM-8L Lithium button cells with solder tabs are available from Biotelemetrics.

Sensors & Electrodes

The extremely high input impedance of our transmitters permits their use with practically any sensor or electrode. pH or specific ion electrodes can be used with the FM-6 transmitter. Simple stranded or coiled wire electrodes can be used with the FM-8 transmitter for biopotential transmission.

Switching

These transmitters can be switched on and off with a miniature magnetically actuated latching reed switch. The switch becomes part of the implant and greatly extends the life of the power cell. Switches are available from Biotelemetrics.
